2. Welcome to the Body Movement Course

Welcome to this space dedicated to body movement. The main objective is for you to achieve that groove and flow that are so essential when executing salsa footwork. Throughout the lessons, you will work so that your dancing is not limited only to steps, but becomes an integral expression of your body.

2.1. The Importance of Full-Body Coordination

Although salsa relies heavily on footwork, to dance with true ease, it is fundamental that the entire body acts in a coordinated manner. In this course, you will learn to synchronize different parts of your anatomy with the music and your steps:

  • Hands and arms: You will learn to give them intention and fluidity.
  • Shoulders: You will discover how to use them to add style and rhythm.
  • Torso: You will work on core mobility to connect the upper and lower body.

2.2. Learning Objectives

The focus of these lessons will allow you to take your dancing to the next level through three fundamental pillars:

2.2.1. Body Unblocking

You will learn specific techniques to unblock your body, allowing movements to emerge naturally and without unnecessary tension.

2.2.2. Musicality and Detail

You will understand how to interpret music not just with your feet, but by adding technical details that enrich your visual aesthetics and your connection to the rhythm.

2.2.3. Fluidity in Movement

The final result will be a dance where the flow is constant, ensuring that every movement is perfectly coordinated with the musical timing and the intention of the step.

4. Styling and Movement in the Son Step

In this lesson, you will delve deeper into one of the most iconic steps: the Son step. The goal is for you to learn how to elevate your dance by adding fluidity and personal style through body movement and arm usage, transforming a basic step into an execution full of technical intent.

4.1. The Rhythmic Base: The Conga Count

To correctly execute this style, you must internalize the specific rhythm of the conga. Although the technique you will learn is applicable to the standard 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 count, in this exercise you will focus on the characteristic accent of Son:

  • Cung-Cung-Pa: This is the rhythmic pattern that will guide your feet and mark the exact moment to apply the styling.

It is essential that you feel how the movement originates from the music so that the transition of the feet is natural and coordinated with the rest of the body.

4.2. Integrating Arms and Contractions

Styling is not limited to the feet alone; it is about “drawing” the movement with the entire torso. To achieve this, you must pay attention to two key elements:

  • Arm movement: You will learn to coordinate your upper limbs to accompany the step, preventing them from remaining static and allowing them to flow with the momentum of the dance.
  • Body contractions: During the execution of the Son step, you will introduce small contractions in the torso that provide that characteristic visual texture of the style.

You will see how these details stem from partner work techniques, but by practicing them individually, you will gain the necessary control to execute them with precision and elegance.

4.3. Keys to Execution

To master this technique, it is important to focus on the continuity of movement. It is not about isolated gestures, but a chain of actions where the step, the contraction, and the arm merge into a single musical beat. Practice by visualizing how each part of your body contributes to drawing the complete figure during the displacement.
